Benign Neglect

Following Cabrillo's initial discovery and coastal exploration, Alta California was with a few exceptions all but forgotten by Spain and its neighboring European colonial powers. A number of historians contend this neglect was indeed beneficial to the region's Native Americans because it spared them the holocaust of death and disease that arrived with the post-conquest Spanish colonists two centuries later.

Statehood to Ishi

This period was one of significant economic growth in which the new state's rich endowment of resources were utilized in support of industrial, agricultural and infrastructural development. It ends with the Panama Pacific International Exhibition which celebrated the rebuilding of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire. On a less celebratory note, it also demarcated the end of a period that saw the death of the State's last naturally free Native American, Ishi.

On the Edge of the World

Built originally in 1858 by Sam Brannan, the Cliff House rests on the end of the continent at Land's End in San Francisco. In 1977 it was incorporated into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area but still functions as a popular restaurant and landmark. Interestingly, as do 21st century tourists, the Yelamu tribe of the Ohlone people also once congregated at Land's End where they would celebrate a successful day's hunt or fishing by reciting traditional poems and stories. Dancing was especially popular and would be performed to chants of "I am dancing, dancing, dancing; dancing on the edge of the world". Centuries later, perched as it is on the edge of the world, by 2014 California's economy was ranked 8th globally.

Alarcon Voyage

Sailing up the Sea of Cortes in 1540, Hernando Alarcon was commissioned by the viceroy of New Spain to provide Coronado's land expedition with supplies in support of its search for the mythical city of Cibola. Alarcon was to meet Coronado at the mouth of a large river previously sighted a year earlier in a voyage undertaken by Francisco de Ulloa. On August 26th Alarcon found the river which he named the "Rio de Nuestra Senora de Buena Guia" -- known today as the Colorado River. Continuing his search for Coronado, Alarcon and a band of twenty men proceeded up the Colorado in two skiffs as far as its confluence with the Gila River. Not making contact with the Coronado expedition, Alarcon left a cache of supplies marked by a cross on which he carved a message for Coronado. Against great odds, it was later found in December by one of Coronado's men, Melchior Diaz, who was searching for Alarcon and his supply party. Although he never made contact with Coronado, Alarcon's voyage did much to dispel the early 16th century belief that California was an island, and that the Sea of Cortez would lead to the imagined northwest passage to the orient.

Cabrillo Voyage

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European explorer to chart the coast of Alta California. Cabrillo sailed north from Navidad on the Mexican west coast on June 27th 1542, discovering current San Diego Bay on September 28, and a week later the Channel Islands. Sailing north he rounded Point Conception, which he named "Cabo de Galera", and proceeded up the coast as far as "Cabo de Pinos" (current Point Reyes) and the Russian River. As would explorers for the next 200 years, Cabrillo missed the entrance to San Francisco Bay. However, coming back down the coast, Cabrillo discovered and entered Monterey Bay, naming it "Bahia de los Pinos". Although his discoveries went largely unnoticed at the time, Cabrillo is remembered today as the first European to explore the Alta California coast. There remains some debate as to whether he was the first European to set foot on California soil, as a number of historians suggest that honor might be more properly bestowed on Hernando Alarcon or Melchior Diaz.

Jesuit Expulsion from Spanish Empire

Although some historians doubt that the Jesuits were guilty of intrigues against the Spanish crown, Carlos III ordered their expulsion from both Spain and its colonial empire in 1767. As a result, Franciscan friars replaced the Jesuits in New Spain and Baja California, where they had been resident for over seven decades. A number of scholars, including Walter Nordhoff and Arthur Quinn, believe the Franciscans as an order were ill-equipped to administer a missionary effort, especially in the context of native cultures. Nordhoff for example argues that the native population in Baja remained stable from 1697 to 1767 under Jesuit presence but plummeted in the years following their expulsion. If that were truly the case, then the fate of Alta California natives seemed to be sealed when the Franciscan missionaries accompanied the Portola Expedition in 1769 into the long neglected reaches of the northern frontier.

Bidwell Party Arrives in California

It is said that 19th century immigrants to California and the West Coast came in three successively larger waves: those arriving in the 1840s seeking land; those in the 1850s searching for gold; and those in the 1860s and afterward looking for a new or better life. After enduring the hardships of the Great Basin badlands and then struggling over the precipitous mountain passes of the Sierra Nevada, the Bidwell-Bartleson party arrived in California's great Central Valley just before the winter of 1841. This small band of thirty-two men and one very brave women became the first wave of adventurous Americans hoping to settle in the benign hills and valleys of California.

Feather River Flood

Starting in mid-December 1955, northern California was struck by an intensive series of storms over an ensuing two week period. Generated by what we now know to be El Nino conditions, warm heavy rain quickly melted the Sierra snowpack, and the resulting floods on the Feather River all but destroyed the Central Valley cities of Marysville and Yuba City. These events ultimately provided political justification for the building of a massive dam on the Feather at Oroville. Although the initial purpose of the project was flood control, it was also seen as an invaluable water resource by agricultural interests, as well as a rapidly growing regional base of southern California water consumers. Elected in 1958 as governor and as some argued, as a strategy to capture southern California votes, Edmund Pat Brown proposed that the water stored in the proposed Lake Oroville, along with that already available in Lake Shasta, be distributed throughout the state. This included pumping it over the Tehachapi mountains and into the Los Angeles basin. In 1973 northern California water flowed over the Techachapis for the first time, and has remained a contentious issue ever since.

Henry Hargrave Sheldon

Henry Hargrave Sheldon was born in Troy, New York, on August 30, 1820. The son of the local Justice of the Peace, Daniel Sheldon (SHEL-1796), Henry represents the sixth generation of Sheldons descending from John Sheldon (SHEL-1630), who immigrated in the mid-1600s to Pawtuxet in Providence County, Rhode Island from Warwickshire, England. Henry, at the age of 30, is listed in the 1850 Federal Census as living in Bristol in Hartford County, CT, where he worked as a copper mine clerk [01=DOCU-0008]. The 1860 Census shows that he and his family had moved to Warren, New Hampshire [02=DOCU-0001]. Apparently, Henry was employed there as a superintendant of a lead and silver mining operation. At that time his family included his wife, Laura Thayer Sheldon and six children - Charles Saber (age 16), Dexter Brittan (14), Laura (11), Fred (6), Henry (4) and Mary (2). Found in the possessions of his grandson, Raymond Sheldon (SHEL-1890), was a tintype photograph which provides us (see photograph at left) with a probable likeness of his image. During the 1860's Henry and his family moved west to California, and by 1866 he was living in Copperopolis working as a mining superintendent [03=DOCU-0002]. Reminiscent of Wallace Stegnar's novel, Angle of Repose, Henry's life seems in many ways to parallel the course of that book's protagonist, Oliver Ward, as he moved from one remote mining location to another. By 1879 we find Henry in western Nevada, working for the Sutro Tunnel Company Named after its founder, successful financier, and future mayor of San Francisco, Adolph Sutro, the Sutro Tunnel drained the Virginia City silver mines tapping the Comstock Lode. Started in 1869, the Sutro Tunnel intersected the main shaft of the Savage Mine 1,640 feet below its Virginia City opening. At completion in 1878, the tunnel exited near Dayton, after passing through six miles of the western Nevada mountains. Shortly prior to selling his stock in the Sutro Tunnel Company and moving to San Francisco, Adolph Sutro engaged Henry Sheldon as the tunnel's assistant superintendent some time in the mid-1870s. In October 1879 Henry accompanied former President U. S. Grant on a tour of the Sutro Tunnel. Interestingly, an article from the 1879 General Telegraph News refers to Henry as the tunnel's "Superintendent", although it is not clear that Sutro had yet transferred that title to him [04=DOCU-0010]. Shortly later in 1880, however, Sutro wrote Henry the following letter, which would indicate at a minimum that by that point Henry had assumed full tunnel management responsibilities [05=DOCU-0011]: [IMAG-0061] It is not clear how long Henry remained in Virginia City, however, a photograph [06=IMAG-0017] taken in about 1890 shows Henry and his wife Laura at the Sheldon family farm near Sebastopol, California. Laura had purchased the farm with Henry's son Dexter in 1880, and remained there rather than accompany her husband to Virginia City, and life in what was still then a rather raw mining town. Unfortunatlely, little is known about the remainder of Henry's life, however, the 1894 Sonoma County Voter Register [07=DOCU-0007] shows him living in Sonoma County, and later the 1900 census similarly shows him living in "North Sebastopol". Although requiring further research, records provided by the Sonoma County Genealogical Society preliminarily indicate that Henry died in 1903 on the Sheldon farm at Inwood.
